Presenting the
College of Charleston
Official Ring Savings Program

You have become a part of the College of Charleston family. Now, it’s time to set your sights on the next milestone…earning the right to wear the College of Charleston official ring. It is easier than ever to save for your ring so you’ll be ready to receive it once you have completed your first 60 hours at the College of Charleston.

The College of Charleston Official Ring Savings Program allows you to save over time for this symbol of your college success. Here’s how it works. When you enroll in the Program, deposit $100 into your Ring Savings Account for the next four fall and spring semesters, enabling you to save $400 towards the purchase of your official College of Charleston ring. If you reach 60 hours in fewer than four semesters, it’s no problem. We will notify you as soon as you become eligible and will assist you in ordering your ring.

Each ring symbolically captures the uniqueness of the College of Charleston. The official ring proudly displays the seal of the College of Charleston which was derived from the City of Charleston’s seal, adopted in 1783. The seal features the Latin phrases Sapientia ipsa libertas, “Knowledge Itself Is Liberty”, and Aedes mores juraque curat, “She cares for Her Temples, Customs, and Rights.” The woman seated holding the scepter is described as a personification of Charleston herself, and evokes an image of the city deriving its livelihood from the sea and prepared to defend itself.  She is shown presenting a laurel wreath to a young man holding a diploma in front of a classroom building. Below the woman is the year 1770 which was the founding year of the College of Charleston. The College of Charleston is the oldest institution of higher education in the State of South Carolina and the 13th oldest in the nation.

Juniors and seniors wear the ring with the school name facing them. Upon the granting of degrees at Commencement, graduates turn the ring around, with the name facing outward. This symbolizes the graduate is now ready to face the world.
