Dan Festa received an award in October of 2015, in recognition of 25 years years since he founded the Good Grief Conference at VCU Health Systems in Richmond, VA.  In March of 2016, his first book was published; Through the Eyes of the Heart: Stories of Love and Loss, which is available at various book outlets.


Brad Rustin has retired after working ten years with Wachovia Bank & Trust in North Carolina and 31 years as president and chief executive officer of Latitude 32 Federal Credit Union in Charleston.


Gretchen Stringer-Robinson teaches history at Central Carolina Technical College and online at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. She has also written a book entitled, Folly Beach: A Brief History.


Bart Blackwell was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives for District 81 in November.  He and his wife, Paula Epting Blackwell '82, live in Aiken.


Sylleste Helms Davis was re-elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives for  District 100.  Sylleste and her husband, Mike, live in Moncks Corner. She also serves on the College of Charleston Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Susan Olson Hilsman represented the College of Charleston at the presidential inauguration at Spartanburg Methodist College. Susan is staff physician at Spartanburg Regional Wound Healing Center and has been a teacher of undergraduates, medical students, and residents for 26 years.


Brian Rutenberg's new book, Clear Seeing Place, was released in October, and was number one on Amazon's Best Seller in Art Essays and Art Business.


Steve and Emily Molony Swanson are recipients of the 2016 Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Low Country Chapter Philanthropists of the Year award. In 2012, Steve and Emily established the Swanson Scholars Program in the Honors College to create endowed and immediate use scholarships. They have continued their philanthropic support of the College through the recently completed BOUNDLESS Campaign.


Barclay Randall Murphy is a military and community liaison for Military Community Connection in North Charleston, SC. She received a master's degree in nonprofit leadership from New England College.


Chip Hunnicutt is the director of marketing at Arcus Hunting LLC, in Covington, GA.  The company designs and manufactures products for hunters. Chip earned his M.S.S. degree from the United States Sports Academy.


Brian Shealy is a senior account executive with Infor. He and his wife, Mary, are proud parents of three sons: Evan (12), Harrison (11), and Victor, born on August 28, 2016.


Ni-cole Mullinax Bernier was recently promoted to organizational excellence director for MUSC University Finance and Administration. Ni-cole also established Salt Air Exchange, a wellness blog, in December 2015.

Jeannie Chapman married Traci McSwain on May 6, 2016. Jeannie is an associate professor of biology and chair of the natural sciences and engineering division at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, SC.

Patrick Manning has joined The Citadel Foundation as database administrator. Previously, Patrick was assistant director of database and reporting for the College of Charleston's department of Institutional Advancement.


Brandi Reddick is the curator and artists manager for Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places. She recently was featured in an article by The Huffington Post on women in the art world. Brandi earned her graduate degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design.


Jennifer Barnes Miotke is a professional matchmaker for One on One Matchmaking in Atlanta, GA.


Erin Elliott married Steve Anthony on October 15, 2016.   The couple lives in Columbus, GA.

Matt Czuchry has rejoined the cast of "Gilmore Girls" in a four-part miniseries; "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life". He will return as Logan Huntzberger, the former love interest of the younger Gilmore Girl, Rory.

John Douglass is the Cougar Club Board's representative to the College of Charleston Alumni Board of Directors. John is a senior credit officer with ServisFirst Bank in Charleston.


Jacob Jordan married Stephanie Lu Gallman on November 18, 2016 at Lowndes Grove in Charleston.  Jacob is an editor with the Associated Press.  The couple lives in Atlanta.

Jordan Johnson Kuhn recently published her first collection of poetry, A Hard Love.


Jim Clement (M.A. '05) has accepted the position of interim priest at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Sycamore, IL. He looks forward to being part of the parish family and beginning his ministry.

Chip Howell is project architect at PFA Architects in Asheville, NC, and does outreach work with several local nonprofits. He also serves as co-chair of the board of directors at Green Opportunities. He and his wife, Sarah Lulavage Addy, have a daughter, Charlotte June, who is four.

Rivers Pearce has been named director of industry at BoomTown, an online real estate platform based in Charleston. Rivers has over nine years of experience in the online marketing and advertising space.  He also serves on the College of Charleston Alumni Association Board of Directors.


Matt Hagan and his wife, Dana, are proud parents of Zachary Andrew Hagan, born on June 1, 2016. He joins big sister, Elizabeth. Matt is manager of investments for Regency Centers Corporation on Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Megan Underhill completed her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Cincinnati in 2016, and is now an assistant professor in sociology at the University of North Carolina Asheville.


Michael Burd has returned to Charleston and is the group sales manager at The Dewberry Charleston.

Jack Daniels has joined Mahaffey Tent & Event Rentals in Memphis, TN, as director of operations.  He also owns EventOps, an event company that specializes in corporate events and managing event budgets.  Jack and his wife, Lindsey, have a son, Jackson Roberts, who is nine.

Jay Jordan was re-elected to the South Carolina State House of Representatives for District 63.  Jay is an attorney in Florence.


Brandi Elkins has joined the South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations as membership development manager.

Martin Tomlinson is a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice, Civil Division, in Washington, DC. He recently moved to the Department's Federal Programs Branch, where he litigates constitutional and administrative issues in federal courts all over the United States. He and his wife, Maddy, live in the DC area.

Evan Guthrie was elected to the Dorchester County District 2 School Board and his law firm, Evan Guthrie Law Firm, was awarded a seventh Star of the Quarter Award by the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD).   Evan was also recognized for his dedication and support for the South Carollna  YLD for the first quarter of 2016-2017 in working with the Wills Clinic Committee.

Jennifer Fernandez married Mike Woodward on October 17, 2015. Jennifer received her M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2008 and is living in Charlotte, NC.


Brett Gardner became the first former Cougar to win the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and is the first Yankee to win a Gold Glove Award since 2000 Brett has long been considered one of the best defensive left fielders in baseball.


J. Griffin Morrow and his wife, Brittany, are the proud parents of Joseph Griffin "Finn" Morrow II, born on November 7, 2016.  Finn joins big sister, Isabella Grace.  Griffin is a private client advisor with Mappus Insurance Agency in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Andrew Muller was named Young Agent of the Year by the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of South Carolina (IIABSC). The award is given to a "young agent", under 40 years old, who has displayed leadership in the industry and community. Andrew is president of Mappus Insurance Agency in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Ali Whitten married Lee R. Von Hofe on September 17, 2016. The couple lives in Greenville, SC, where  Ali is a physician assistant for Greeenville Health System.


Josh Cockrell married Brooke Prinzi  February 6, 2016, and earned his master's in public policy from Jacksonville University on April 30, 2016.

Amanda Kilbane Cook and Neal Cook announce the birth of their son, Beauregard "Beau" Cook, on February 23, 2016.  The Cook family lives in Charleston.


Natalie Gordon and Charles Gubman '07 married on August 27, 2016. Natalie works for LinkedIn as an account executive of marketing solutions, and Charlie is a business analyst at Legal and General Investment Management America in Chicago.

Marianne McNeeley is an on-premise sales representative for Southern Wine and Spirits representing the Beam-Suntory brand. Marianne married Matthew Seel on October 24, 2015, at The Citadel's Summerall Chapel.


Jillian Manna Barton is an attorney for Robertson Hollingsworth and Flynn, LLC. in Charleston. She received her J.D. from Charleston School of Law.

Kristy Pierce Danford (MPA) hosted a presentation at the College on improving the local justice system in Charleston. Kristy is project director for the Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council .

Britt Foster is an integration project manager at Seamless Medical Systems and lives in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Brad Gustafson is actively working on ways to attract more software and tech companies to the Southeast, specifically the Coastal Carolina regions. Brad has relocated to Alpharetta, GA, from Denver, Colorado, with a global software company, Xero Accounting Software, as their very first employee in the region. He and his wife, Jessica, were married October 25, 2014.

Haley O'Brien was awarded the Alfred Sherwood Romer Prize from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. It is one of the Society's most prestigious awards. This award recognizes an outstanding scientific contribution in vertebrate paleontology by a predoctoral student. The prize is awarded based on the scientific value and quality of the oral presentation of research during the Romer Prize session at the SVP Annual Meeting.

David Rosansky is director of quality assurance and project management at Compassionate Home Health Care in Broomfield, CO.


Sarah Flick joined the Idaho Department of Commerce Tourism Development team. Sarah has past experience in marketing and brand management, and is excited to marry her love of travel and marketing to help promote Idaho.

Caitlin Rice graduated from Temple University Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia in 2015, and is now assistant district attorney in Chester County, PA.

Sarah Frances Ward married Daniel Stern on October 15, 2016, on Goldbug Island. Daniel is the grandson of the late College of Charleston President Emeritus, Dr. Theodore Sanders Stern. The wedding party included matron of honor, Ashley Tanner Smithson '10, Lauren Boyce Del Duca '10, Gibbon Miler Ashley '10, Kera Jenkins Salzer '10, Kelsi Ward Molowa '10, and Danielle Ely '10.

James Tauscher recently accepted the conference services manager position at The Hay-Adams, a luxury hotel across the street from the White House in Washington, D.C.


Nancy Austin is a nursing student at Bryan College of Health Sciences working towards her BSN, and expects to graduate in December. She presented on the impact of shift lengths on the health of nurses at the National Student Nurse Convention in Orlando, FL.

Jessica Bialas is currently working towards her MBA at Vanderbilt University and expects to graduate in May of 2017.


Kaitlyn Stokes married Kenny Ladnier on October 28, 2016, in Grand Bay, AL. Kaitlyn is director of logistics for Hill and Brooks Coffee and Tea Company.

Michelle Miller married Stephanie Haney on October 22, 2016, on a farm in Salisbury, NC. Bridesmaids included: Lauren Stegeman '12, Madeline Huggins '12, Suzanne Sifri '12, Claire Sparks '14, Kaitlin Lieck '14, Melanie Holland '13, and Emily Gooding '13.

Candice Ulmer was elected as one of five to the International Metabolomics Society Early Career Members committee. Candice received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Florida in 2016, and is a post-doctoral research associate for the National Institute of Standards and Testing in Charleston.


Dylan Fernandes has been elected a state representative in Massachusetts. He will represent Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket. Previously, Dylan was the digital director in the office of Massachusetts Attorney General, Maura Healey.

Sallie Funderburk is the audience and growth manager at Charlotte Five, a division of The Charlotte Observer.

Savannah Johnson James recently moved to the Upstate to lead the new Mappus Insurance office as senior client advisor.

Gretchen Shoemaker has been hired as a client liaison at Mappus Insurance in Mount Pleasant, SC.


Lauren Hurlock is the assistant director of marketing and communications for the Alumni Affairs office at the College.

Hillary Saunders is payroll administrator for human resources at MRC Smart Technology Solutions: A Xerox Company in San Diego, CA.


Tristan Howard has joined Moody and O'Neal CPAs, LLC. in Mt. Pleasant, SC as an associate. Tristan will be responsible for tax planning, preparation, and bookkeeping services.

Drew Hyams (M.S. '16) moved away from home for the first time to start his career in Big Four accounting with Ernst and Young, LLP in the Baltimore, MD office downtown in the Inner Harbor.

Bethany Jenkins is a former Miss College of Charleston and was recently crowned Miss South Carolina US Supranational. Bethany will spend her time participating in as many community service projects as possible until the national pageant in June 2017.

Juan Maegli is one of five new members to be elected to the World Sailing Athletes' Commission.  Juan is a three-time Olympian and former College of Charleston All-American sailor.

Michael Rentz (MBA) is a global marketing and customer insights manager for Maersk Line. Michael was one of two hundred people in North America selected for the Maersk Line Graduate Program.


Jane Hodge Batten (MAT) is a special education teacher at Woodland High School in St. George, SC.

Maddie Bonifield has joined Charming Inns of Charleston as marketing assistant.

Ellie Flock is a graduate student at King's College London studying global health with conflict and security.

Grant Maddox has joined Detterbeck Wealth Management in Charleston as a service associate.
