November 2016

1980

Frank Gadsden has been elected vice-chair of the College of Charleston Board of Trustees.  He previously served as secretary of the Board of Trustees. Frank is executive vice president and chief information officer of Clover Community Bank.

1981

David Hay has been elected chair of the College of Charleston Board of Trustees.  David is a past president of the Alumni Association and has also served on the Foundation Board.  He is president and co-founder of Hay Tire Company, Inc. in Charleston.

Renee Buyck Romberger has been elected secretary of the College of Charleston Board of Trustees. Renee resides in Greenville, S.C., and is vice president of community health policy and strategy at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. She is also a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.  Renee has served on both the College of Charleston Alumni Association Board and the Foundation Board.

1984

Barbara Kim Miller has joined Patrick Henry Academy in Estill, S.C., as the new director of administration. She taught for twelve years at Orangeburg Prep before starting this new position.  Kim earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina and practiced law in Walterboro before beginning her career in education.

Elaine Parshall is an engineering instructor at the South Carolina Governors School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville, SC.  She received her M.S. from the Univerisity of Arizona and her Ph.D. from Tufts University.

1985

Liz Boyer Caldwell was awarded the 2016 Christie's International Real Estate Luxury Specialist at the annual Agents Conference in Washington, D.C. in October.  Liz is an estate agent with Premier Estate Properties in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Scott Smith has been named a principal at GEL Geophysics LLC. He has more than 30 years of project management, sales, and consulting experience. Scott is also a Charleston-based senior project manager of The GEL Group, Inc. subsidiary. 

1987

Brian Rutenberg was a guest on the Savvy Painter podcast in October.  His new book, Clear Seeing Place, was recently a #1 Amazon  Best Seller in Art Essays and Art Business. Brian and his family live in New York City.

1988

Jennifer " JJ" Jahn Larson is associate director of student services at Richland College in Dallas, TX. Her new position oversees counseling services, health center, and disability services, as well as the campus' behavior intervention and threat assessment program.

Anthony Meyer has accepted the position of director of development at Our Lady of the Lake University of San Antonio. The university was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence, a religious order begun in 18th century Lorraine, France.

1991

Adam Mersereau is a sports attorney at PGA Tour, Inc. He and his wife, Kristen, live in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. with their two daughters: Emma and Mary.

1992

Peyton Bradham is a senior network engineer for the Department of Defense (U.S. Navy) in Charleston.

Kari Maastricht has joined Engaging Creative Minds in Charleston as the volunteer and program coordinator.

Terence O'Donnell, formerly Terence Brunner, was promoted to lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department on September 17, 2014 after 12 years as a fireman at ladder 35 on the west side of Manhattan. He is currently covering division 7, "Da Bronx."

1994

Tracy MacKay Ratliff traveled the country curating her journey as a creative from Florida's Treasure Coast to Colorado's Rocky Mountains. She has settled in Columbia, SC with husband, Chris, and their two children, Kenzie and Seamus.  Tracy works as a graphic designer through her company, MacRat - Creative Design Services.

1995

Jason Hustedt is associate professor in human development and family studies and graduate coordinator at the University of Delaware. Jason is also research director for the Delaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood.  He earned both his master's degree and Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Cornell.

1996

Melissa McCants Azevedo is the vice president of special events for the Charleston RiverDogs.  She and her husband, Tyson, have a daughter, Brynlee Rose, born on December 26, 2012.

1997

April Corley earned her M.D. at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2003 and works as a physician at Novant Crown Point Family Physicians.  She and her husband, Nicolas Cruz, live with their family in Matthews, N.C.

B. DaNine Jenkins Fleming (M.Ed.) has been selected to represent the Medical University of South Carolina in Leadership South Carolina (Class of 2017). DaNine was also awarded the 2016 Dr. Earl B. Higgins Diversity Achievement Award and selected as one of the Top Ten to Watch for the Summerville Journal Scene.

Addie McLaurin is a consultant for North Highland Consulting in Charlotte, NC. She earned her M.B.A. from The Citadel.

Janne Vara is the chief financial officer at Nanocomp Oy, Ltd. in Finland.

1999

John Duckworth was the featured artist at a new pop-up gallery in the Wedge Building in Asheville's River Arts District. The pop-up gallery features works from "Awake", John's most recent show in the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston.  The show is an immersive art experience aimed at engaging visitors in ways they might not expect.

Carey Lucas Nikonchuk (M.A. '02) is a Realtor for The Brennaman Group and was named an East Cooper Top Producer and a  Realtor of Distinction for 2013 and 2014.  Carey lives in Mount Pleasant with her husband, Eric, and their two daughters: Lily and Evelyn.

Heather Parker Pound is the coastal South Carolina corporate underwriting manager for SCETV, SC Public Radio, PBS, and NPR.  Heather and her husband, Teddy, live on James Island with their daughter, Parker Caroline, age 12; and their son, Cooper Heyward Hurley, age 8.

Nicole Scheman is owner of EZ FingerPrints in Largo, FL.

2001

Julien Charpentier is a senior manager at BeringPoint, a consulting firm in Paris, France.

Kevin Flarisee works for the South Carolina Arts Commission as the coordinator for executive, program, and department support.

Leslie Johnson Howder has been named an Assistant Principal of the Year by the Berkeley County School District. Leslie is assistant principal for Sangaree Middle School.  She earned her master's and specialist's degrees from The Citadel in educational administration and her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.  She and her husband, Connor, live in Summerville with their daughter, Adeline.

Kristina Riegle relocated to Rochester Hills, MI from Maryland in September 2016. Kristina is a professional actor and singer. She works at Expressions Music Academy as a voice instructor and also for Wayne State University's Medical School as a standardized patient teaching associate.

2002

Sue Harris is the owner and designer at Beezie Glassworks in Charleston. Sue makes custom fused glass cabinet hardware (drawer pulls and knobs) along with mirrors, picture frames and wine stoppers.

Alan Shirey was named a recipient of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' 2015 Science, Technology, Engineer and Math Outstanding Team Achievement Award. Alan lives in Charleston, S.C.

2003

Brendan Connor is owner and executive chef at Whisk Gourmet Food + Catering in Miami, Florida.   He and his wife have two children: Madison and Quinn.

Crystal Smith-Connelly recently wrote, directed, and filmed the Godly Acres web series in Los Angeles. The first episode will premiere at AtomaCon in North Charleston on November 19th.

2004

Meike McDonald (M.Ed. '05) received her doctorate in education from Walden University in 2016 and teaches at Mont Kiara International School in Malaysia.

Martin Tomlinson is a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice, Civil Division, in Washington, DC. He recently moved to the Department's Federal Programs Branch, where he litigates constitutional and administrative issues in federal courts all over the United States. He and his wife,Maddy, live in the DC area.

Boo Walker just released his third novel, Red Mountain. Boo lives in eastern Washington and sells and markets globally for Hedges Family Estate.

2005

Carolina Davila Jewett is a sales associate for Carolina One Real Estate, working in the Mt. Pleasant office on Coleman Boulevard.

2006

Leandra Hill owns Leandra Hill Metal Works in Greenville, S,C.  She uses traditional goldsmithing methods in making jewelry to create a connection to the past, using fire and a hammer to form silver and gold.

Margaret Burruss and James Ruebush Lamb '08 were married on October 8, 2016.  Rue and Meg live in Richmond, VA.

Amy Melia is an associate attorney at civil litigation firm, Kubicki Draper, in Miami, FL.  She received her J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2009.

2007

John Florence and Tara Bush were married on September 24, 2016.  The couple is living in Charleston.

Ali Fisher Muller is owner of A.Caldwell Events, a full-service wedding and special events planning firm in Charleston. She specializes in destination weddings and all of her employees are College of Charleston hospitality and tourism management graduates.

Lindsay Stuber is the preservation and programs director at Historic Rock Hill in Rock Hill, SC.

2008

Jessica Cox married Oliver Davis-Urman on October 22, 2016 at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston. Jessica is an operations manager for Apple in Austin, Tex., overseeing the introduction of new products.

Erin Delaney is a senior digital sales specialist at Live 5 News in Charleston.

Lauren Johnson married William Grimmer on September 10, 2016.  Lauren and William live in  Alexandria, VA.

Natalie Nance is a web marketing specialist for the American Bible Society, located in Philadelphia, Penn.

Maggie Trela recently moved back to her hometown of St. Augustine, FL with her husband. Maggie works remotely as a copyright specialist at an educational nonprofit based in Portland, OR.

2009

Laura Hoover married Mark Dale Chappell, Jr. on July 16, 2016.

Meghan Dalton is an associate attorney for BatesCarey, LLP in Chicago.  The firm is nationally recognized and boasts one of the largest insurer-side practices in the United States. Meghan  is also the president of the Chicago College of Charleston alumni chapter.

2010

Adrienne Rudkin married Robert Andrew DeSena on September 10, 2016 in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard. Adrienne and Robert have known each other for many years, having grown up down the street from one another in Fairfield Conn.

Dana Arnold married Jason Dickie on October 8, 2016.  Dana is the royalty coordinator for Big Machine Label Group in Nashville, Tenn.

Portavia Featherstone earned her master's in public health from the University of South Carolina in 2015.  She recently published an article in the Maternal and Child Health Journal entitled,"Geographic Assessibility to Health Services and Neonatal Mortality among Very Low Birthweight Infants in South Carolina".

Colie McClellan married Mark William Kennedy on October 6, 2016 in McClellanville, S.C. Colie is a grant writer and speech coach in Manhattan and received her MFA in acting from Rutgers.  She was the director's assistant and  had a role in "Sophie and the Rising Sun" which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Gillian Cote married Austin Kistler on September 24, 2016. The bridal party included maid of honor Kaitlyn Stokes Ladnier '12, Kelley Kroll van de Kamp '11, Jennifer Darlak '10, Erin Wendel Player '10, and Carrie Papa '10.  Gillian is a librarian for the law firm, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia, SC.

Elizabeth Nicholson has joined the Charleston law firm, Rosen Hagood, as an associate attorney. Elizabeth practices in the areas of employment law, construction law and litigation, business and commercial litigation, and probate, estate, and trust litigation.

Jesse Sandole was recently recognized by Zagat as one of Charleston's 30 Under 30. Jesse is chief executive officer and operating partner at 167 Raw, a seafood and oyster bar in Charleston.

Erin Laray Stubbs (M.A. '16) is a  digital editor for Cape Fear Publishing and Virginia Living magazine.

Matt Zeleniak was recently recognized by Zagat as one of Charleston's 30 Under 30. Matt is head brewer at Freehouse Brewery, and works to develop a variety of styles for the 100% organic brewery.

2011

Brianna Berry is coffee director at Harold's Cabin, a neighborhood restaurant and mini-market, and works to incorporate the Cabin's rooftop garden ingredients into her list of specialty coffee concoctions. She was recognized by Zagat as one of Charleston's 30 Under 30.

Kaylin Currie married Sam Centanni on September 24, 2016. Kaylin is a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina's accelerated nursing program in May of 2013, and worked as a registered nurse in MUSC's neuroscience intensive care unit before moving to Nashville.

Elizabeth Cote Hiott works at Water Missions International as volunteer coordinator and donor care officer in Charleston.

Kyle Norton was recently recognized by Zagat as one of Charleston's 30 Under 30. Kyle is co-owner of 167 Raw, a seafood and oyster bar in Charleston.

2012

Samantha Berinsky and Tyler Hord '13 were married on October 8, 2016, in Rock Hill, S.C., after being forced to evacuate Charleston due to Hurricane Matthew. The bride and groom, along with 200 wedding guests, relocated to City Club in Rock Hill thanks to the Rock Hill High School Class of 1991, who allowed them to use their reunion location for the wedding.

Tiara Jones recently earned a master's in education from St. Catherine University and now teaches for the Charleston County School District as a primary Montessori teacher.

Kelcie Keith works for The Unknown Brewing Company as the North Carolina and South Carolina coastal beer ambassador. Kelcie lives in Charleston.

Shaun Kraisman has joined WDSU New Orleans as the 4 P.M. news anchor. He joined WDSU from WINK Fort Meyers- Naples, FL where he was the morning and noon anchor.

Alyssa Leibman was awarded Horry County Schools Tech Innovator and currently serves as the gifted and talented coordinator for Myrtle Beach High School, in addition to serving on the Literacy Intervention Taskforce.

Thai Phi (MBA) was recently recognized by Zagat as one of Charleston's 30 Under 30. Thai is owner and chef for Pink Bellies, a Vietnamese food truck that serves banh mi sandwiches and more with locally sourced ingredients.

Kristen Wolfe was promoted to director of special events for the Charleston RiverDogs baseball team.

2013

Katie Gilmer works at the Hilton Diagonal Mar in Barcelona, Spain as assistant manager of groups and events.

Hannah Hughes is a fourth year medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Montgomery Mauro has started his own production company, No2Maura Productions,  with his brother in New York City. They have produced short films, sketches, commercials, and now a new web series. No2Mauro is a full-fledged production company dedicated to develop, create and produce digital media that speaks to, motivates, and inspires audiences.

2014

Ashley Brooks earned her master's in sociology from The George Washington University in May,  and now is owner of Pounce Cat Cafe on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston.

Brandi Schumacher married Max Curioz on October 17, 2015. Brandi is currently earning her master's in medical science at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C., and plans to pursue a career as a physician assistant.

Adam Griffin married Jessica Simons on September 24, 2016 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.  Adam is a commercial real estate associate for Colliers International. He and Jessica live in Mt. Pleasant.

Katie Hess is events manager at the new Phoenix campus of Galvanize, an educational community for the tech industry with immersive courses for aspiring web developers and data scientists; as well as community workspace for those already working in the tech industry.

Kaitlin Hetrick is a customer service manager for the box office for Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston.

Alaina Watkins is executive coordinator at Artemis Capital Management in Austin, TX.

2015

Carrie Bailes is a first year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville.

Master Bines joined the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage office on Centre Pointe Drive in North Charleston where he represents sellers and buyers handling their real estate transactions.

Chaisson Dangerfield is a benefits administrator at Benefitfocus in Charleston.

Amber Kemp joined CodeLynx as a marketing associate. Previously, she was a business administrator at Coastlend Mortgage.

Julia Moss is a first year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville.

Joye Nettles was featured in The Root's magazine as a STEM star. The 2016 Young Futurist continues to share her story with aspiring techies, particularly women and people of color. When Joye is not empowering and encouraging her peers, the rising star works as a junior associate consultant at ThoughtWorks, a global software-development firm in Dallas.

2016

Clay Dustin is a Peace Corps secondary upper primary education program volunteer living in Namibia. Clay will be teaching math and is also learning KKG, locally known as Damara-Nama,  a language spoken by the two tribes.

Jack Fultz is an associate account executive for Yelp in New York City.

Samantha Hord is a graduate student in the Masters of Accountancy program at the College and a graduate  assistant for the department of accounting and legal studies.

Abigail Reed works for U.S. Senator Tim Scott 's Greenville, SC office as a constituent services representative.

Tim Rule (M.A.) has joined the Charleston Symphony Orchestra as marketing coordinator.

Meghan White (M.S.) is an editorial intern at the National Trust for Historic Preservation and has authored several articles on historic preservation and architecture for the organization.
