October 2017


Linda Dingle Gadson, Director of Rural Mission, Inc. on Johns Island, SC, is the first recipient of the MTW Human Service Award named for three Lowcountry leaders; Judge Arthur McFarland, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, and former state senator, Reverend McKinley Washington.


Randell Stoney has been named to the 2018 "The Best Lawyers in America" list for his efforts in the areas of construction law and product liability litigation: defendants. Randell is a managing member and attorney at Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC in Charleston.


Marc Smith has joined Elaine Brabham and Associates as a Real Estate Agent in Charleston.

Rob Spainhour served as a public High School Principal in Eastern NC, while also serving as a priest in Episcopal parishes. He became rector in 2015 of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Swanton, VT, and Vicar of St. John's Episcopal Church in Highgate Falls, VT. Rob was recently elected to the school board of the local high school and is active on several local boards including the Rotary Club of St. Albans, VT. December 2017 will mark 25 years of ordained ministry as an Episcopal Priest. Currently he serves as the diocesan representative on Diocesan Council for anti-racism.


Carolyn Burroughs Muller has been elected Executive Vice President of Auto-Owners Insurance. She will continue to lead the claims division for the company, and is a member of the company's executive committee. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of all Auto-Owners Companies and affiliates. Carolyn and her husband, Barry, live in Dewitt, MI.


Cindy Ogier Nye is a Realtor at Elaine Brabham & Associates, LLC in Charleston, and has earned the designations of Senior Real Estate Specialist, Resort and Second Home Real Estate Specialist, and Certified Negotiation Expert.


Sabra Horne has joined the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as Director of Stakeholder Engagement for Cyber Infrastructure Resilience. Sabra earned her M.P.A. from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2005.


Chris French Kramer is a Speech Language Pathologist for Kindred @ Home in Monroe, NC, and earned her MCD in speech language pathology from Arkansas State University. She and her husband, Scott, have two children, Thomas and Elizabeth. Chris also works with children in speech language pathology and volunteers at her children's charter school.


Tanya Sumner Godfrey (M.Ed. '01) is a Science Teacher at Goose Creek High School in Goose Creek, SC, and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2012. Tanya has received National Board Certification and earned her Ph.D. in science education from Capella University in 2012. She and her husband, Jimmy, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Madison.

Stacy Ramsey Scruggs is the Director of Case Management and Intake Services at Easterseals South Carolina in Fort Mill, SC.


Dorothy McFalls (M.P.A. '95) published a new mystery novel set in the Lowcountry of South Carolina under the pen name Dorothy St. James. Asking for Truffle is the first book in the Southern Chocolate Shop Mysteries.

David Schuj has joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Southern Coast Real Estate as an agent based in the Summerville office. David has an M.B.A. from Charleston Southern University.

Drew Sineath's real estate agency, Sineath & Associates, joined Carolina One's Goose Creek office and will continue doing business as Sineath & Associates. Drew has held a realtor's license since 2002.


Brandy Bunn Little is a Resource and Special Education Teacher at Pinckney Elementary School in Mount Pleasant, SC. She earned her M.Ed. in learning disabilities from Francis Marion University in 2000. She and her husband, Ben, have two children, Branton and Bevan.


Heather Fewox is Manager of Digital Marketing and Web Development at Britax Child Safety, Inc. in Fort Mill, SC.

Venus Nipper Poe is a personal injury Attorney and Founder of the law firm, Venus Poe, PA. She was recently elected president of the Fountain Inn Rotary Club, and serves on the South Carolina Bar's House of Delegates and on the board of directors for the South Carolina Bar Foundation. Venus earned her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law.


Daniel Rumsey is a Client Success Manager at Equifax Workforce Solutions on Daniel Island, SC.


John Ballard earned his M.B.A. from Clemson University in August 2017, and is a BI Platform Architect at Michelin.


Amanda Bunting Comen is an Account Manager at Fisher Creative in Charleston, and also the Marketing Director at South Side Bait and Tackle on Johns Island.

Keisha Boyd Hawes was the recipient of the Queen of Hearts Award as part of the Center for Women's Charleston's Most Influential Women awards. Keisha is Human Resources Assistant at Ishpi Information Technologies, Inc., located in Mount Pleasant.


Lee Keadle and Katherine Hunt Keadle, of Carolina One Real Estate, are founding partners of The Keadle Group, one of the highest ranked teams in the Charleston real estate market. They are located ot the Carolina One Real Estate office on Folly Road in Charleston.

Claire Terhune is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas and won the 2017 National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation Award of approximately $700,000 to acquire microCT equipment fot the University of Arkansas and the U.S. Interior Highlands Region. The co-principal investigator on the award was CofC alumna, Dr. Haley O'Brien '09.

Alexa Thacker is an Academic Program Assistant at the Roanoke Higher Education Center in Roanoke, VA.


Bradley Banias presented When the American Dream is Denied to Some: Challenging Naturalization and Green Card Delays as part of Representing Arab and Muslim-Americans impacted by Federal and Local Policies. The presentation was hosted by Project South and the Charleston School of Law. Bradley is an immigration and litigation attorney for Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC. in Charleston.

Tia Canty-Wright earned her doctor of nursing practice in executive nursing administration from the University of South Alabama on July 28, 2017.

Douglas Panzone has been commissioned by the College of Charleston's Department of Campus Housing to paint a floor mural on the large courtyard inside George Street Apartments. Previously, during the construction of the Liberty Street Residence Hall, Douglas painted a wall mural along the parking garage wall to beautify the view from the rooms that face it.


Liz DePriest Carnes is a New York State Master Teacher and teaches for the North Syracuse Central School District. She earned her master's degree in mathematics education from Syracuse University in 2006. She and her husband, Brian, live in Liverpool, NY.

Carie Dixon was named the 2017 Teacher of the Year at Jerry Zucker Middle School for Science in North Charleston.


Trey Eppes and his wife, Caitlin, are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Avery, born on August 18, 2017. Trey is Vice President at JP Morgan Private Bank and lives in Boston, MA.


Annie Kadala Harris is the Elementary School Media Coordinator for Southwest Elementary in Clemmons, NC. She earned her master's degree in library science from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2008. Annie and her husband, Joseph, have one son, Joseph Ned Harris II, born November 19, 2014.

Clay McElheny is a Science and Physics Teacher at Lake Oconee Academy in Greensboro, GA. He is completing a Ph.D. in science education from the University of Georgia and expects to graduate in May 2018.

Kathryn Smith is Senior Global Brand Manager at Skullcandy, located in Park City, Utah. The company designs headphones, mp3 player watches, audio accessories, and other audio-enabled lifestyle products.


Katie Puza Alex is earning her M.B.A. at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and expects to graduate in June 2019.

Katie O'Neil married Eric Wengenroth on July 8, 2017. Katie is the Senior Corporate Events Manager at LogMeIn and resides in Melrose, MA.


Lindsey Westbury Antley is a sixth grade Math Teacher at Chapin Intermediate School in Chapin, SC and was named Chapin Intermediate Teacher of the Year for 2017-2018. Lindsey earned her M.Ed.from Southern Wesleyan University in 2010. She and her husband, Adam, have two children, Brayden Grayce and Graham.

Elisabeth Bischofberger married Andrew Hare on April 8, 2017 in Key West, FL. Elisabeth is Regional Manager of Strategic Accounts at Benefitfocus in Charleston, SC.

Gervase Caycedo Kolmos is the recipient of the Woman to Watch Award as part of the Center for Women's Charleston's Most Influential Women awards. Gervase is the founder of Shiny. Happy. Human., a life coaching practice which guides women through life's most challenging transitions.

John Young and Chelsea Hawker married on April 2, 2016. John earned his master's in plant, environmental, and soil science from Louisiana State University in 2015, and is an Environmental Scientist at Keramida Environmental in Indianapolis, Ind. Chelsea is a Political Consultant.


Taylor Bradley has been named Assistant Principal of Cane Bay High School in Summerville, SC. Taylor earned his M.Ed. from Charleston Southern University in 2015, and expects to complete his Ed.D. from the University of South Carolina in Spring 2019.

Eric Hiltz (M.S.) married Erin McClure on May 14, 2016. Eric is a Biologist for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The couple resides on James Island.

Baker Manning is featured on Bravo's tv show "Below Deck". She worked on private jets and sailboats, but was first introduced to yachting in 2014 when she landed her first big job doubling as a deckhand and a stewardess on a privately owned motor yacht travelling throughout the Bahamas and the East Coast. Baker spends the offseason continuing to travel and explore, and created a website which guides and encourages others to do the same.

Julia Pridmore married Zach McClanahan on June 17, 2017. Julia earned her M.A.T. in art education from Lander University in 2001, and her Ed.S. from Clemson University in 2017. She is an Art Teacher in Greenwood, SC.

Nichole Neyhart Sidlovsky was named the 12th Annual Holocaust Educator of the Year on April 23, 2017 in New Orleans. Nichole is a history Teacher at Mandeville High School in Mandeville, LA, and is completing her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Cara Wideman Walters is the Public Relations Director at Spooner Health in Spooner, WI. She and her husband, Jason, were married in 2012.

Andrea Horath White (M.A.T. '13) is a Music Teacher at Ebenezer Avenue Elementary in Rock Hill, SC, and also maintains a private voice studio, and is conductor in residence for Mosaic Opera in Charlotte, NC. She and Johnathan White '16 were married in 2013.


Taylor DeBartola married William Andrew Shalosky II on April 16, 2016. Taylor is an Interior Designer and owns Taylor DeBartola Interior Design, LLC in Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA.

Camela Guevara has been named the Artist-in-Residence for the City of North Charleston for the 2017-18 year. She uses her talents to work in the realms of sewing, weaving, and embroidery, and most recently, goauche paint. Camela also teaches at Girls Rock Camp, a program of the Carolina Youth Action Project.


Danielle Ireton is an Actuarial Analyst at Pinnacle Actuarial Resources in Atlanta, GA. She graduated from Florida State University with an M.S. in financial mathematics in 2015.

Bellamy Purinton is planning corporate events, weddings, and other functions in the Charleston area for Hamby Catering & Events as their event producer. She has been with the company since 2014.

Samantha Sammis has been awarded the Community Service Award by the Charleston Branch NAACP. Samantha is Executive Director and Founder of Loving America Street, a non-profit that serves the East Side Community of Charleston.

Crystal MacLean Smith and her husband, Thomas, announce the birth of Declan Smith on May 5, 2017. Declan joins his big brother, Aden. The Smith family lives in Summerville, SC.

Spencer Todd successfully defended and received his Ph.D. in toxicology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in July 2017. Spencer is an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellow at the Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, MD.

Sarah Wolcott graduated from Old Dominion University in August 2017, with a M.S.Ed. in early childhood education. She is a second grade Teacher for Norfolk Public Schools in Virginia.


Melissa Colebank is a Customer Support Specialist for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in Denver.

Megan Koehler Hoffman earned her master's degree in physician assistant studies from the Medical University of South Carolina in August 2017. She and her husband, Quinn, have moved to New Windsor, NY, where he is with the United States Marine Corps.

Cassie Jansch is a seventh grade Science Teacher for Green County Public Schools in Stanardsville, VA. She earned an M.S. in forest resources from the University of Georgia in 2015, and an M.A.T. in secondary education from the University of Virginia in 2017.

Michael Owens (M.A.) is author of Burned: Conversations with a Black WWII Veteran, which chronicles the story of Rollins Edwards, a civil rights activist and Dorchester County's first African-American councilman, who was subjected to mustard gas testing during WWII. Michael has formed the nonprofit, Voices Speak, which is dedicated to giving voices to the voiceless by using novels or other media platforms. He also created an oral history course at the College where Edwards often visits to speak with students.

Reggie Patterson earned his M.Ed. and Ed.S. from Clemson University in May 2017, and is a School Counselor at Mauldin High School in Greenville County, SC.

Lauren Harvey married Johnny Worthy on April 8, 2017. Lauren is a Teacher at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School in Somerville, MA, and was voted Teacher of the Year in 2016.


Gabi Corey is an Italian Auction Specialist and Artist Research Specialist at artnet in New York City. Gabi earned a master of literature degree in medieval history from the University of Glasgow in 2016.

Melissa James is a physician assistant in psychiatry at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, GA. She received her master's degree in physician assistant studies from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Angelica Smith, of Hanahan, SC, married Kristian Marquez on January 14, 2017. Angelica earned her M.Ed in instructional design from Western Governors University in 2016.

Alison Massari is the Front Desk Receptionist at McCay, Kiddy & Associates, LLC, a CPA firm in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Alaina Novak lives in Florence, SC, and is a first grade Teacher for Florence School District 1. She is completing her M.Ed. in teaching at the University of South Carolina and expects to graduate in December 2017.

Kirk Vitello has joined Dale Carnegie of South Carolina as a certified Trainer and Senior Consultant. Kirk has over 700 hours of experience in coaching and training business professionals.


Corey Heyward is the Wexler Curatorial Fellow for the Drayton Hall Preservation Trust in Charleston. She is cataloging the archeological collection into an online database created by Monticello. Corey earned a master's in anthropology with a focus in archaeology and museum studies from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and has previously interned at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.

Amanda Roscoe has been accepted into the Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) for the 2017-18 school year. She will be an English Language Assistant in two middle schools near Lyon, France.


Tyler Clem (M.S.'16) married Jennifer Lauren Polk on August 26, 2017, in Aiken, SC. Tyler is a grants associate for NCGS, Inc. The couple lives in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Elizabeth Kelley earned her master's degree in clinical exercise physiology at Ball State University and teaches courses in the exercise science curriculum at CofC. She is instructing fitness classes and serving as a Clinical Research Assistant for the department.

Morgan O'Neill is an eighth grade Teacher at Hanahan Middle School in Hanahan, SC, and was awarded Rookie Teacher of the Year for the 2015-16 school year.

Clark Phelps and Katie Lynam were married on Folly Beach May 7, 2016. Katie and Clark are medical students at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and will graduate with their medical degrees in May 2019.

Ela Schmitt has worked in the marketing department for the St. Thomas Marriott for the past year, and recently weathered Category 5 Hurricane Irma at the hotel on the outskirts of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.


Lori Pimental is an Assistant Manager for Brand Development at Newell Brands, located in Boca Raton, FL. She earned her M.A. in management from Wake Forest University in May 2017.

Carolyna Ramirez is the Lead Ticket Agent at The Charleston Gaillard Center in downtown Charleston.


Amanda Doran is an Account Associate at Flourish Integrated Communications in Greenville, SC, an award-winning boutique marketing firm.

Hope Reilly (M.A. '17) teaches ninth grade honors world history at Henderson Collegiate High School in Henderson, NC.

Christine Vinciguerra has joined Respite Care Charleston as Program Coordinator for the Johns Island program. Previously, Christine volunteered at Respite Care Charleston for one of her college classes and formed a passion for caring for people dealing with dementia.

Meredith Wohl is the General Audience Publicity Coordinator at PBS in Arlington, VA.
