Legacy Scholarships 

For student leaders on campus

The College of Charleston is proud to offer scholarships to legacy students who have demonstrated an active life in the College community and who are leaders to fellow students. These scholarships are open to incoming and current students. 

Legacy Scholarships: 

  • Willard A. Silcox ’33 Memorial Scholarships:  In 1970, the Willard A. Silcox Scholarship was inaugurated to honor a member of the Class of 1933 who devoted more than 45 years of his life to his alma mater and the Alumni Association.  Mr. Silcox held several positions at the College including administrator, coach and executive secretary of the Alumni Association.  The Silcox Scholarship is open only to children of alumni.
  • Harry W. Freeman '43 Scholarship: The Harry W. Freeman ’43 Scholarship was established in 1990. It honors a Distinguished Professor of Biology and alumnus who gave 39 years of service to his alma mater.  Dr. Freeman was a Past President of the Alumni Association and received an honorary degree from the College of Charleston.  The Freeman Scholarship is open only to relatives of alumni. This scholarship is not available for 2017-2018.
  • Frances G. and George B. Buell Memorial Scholarships: The Frances Gooding Buell '24 Memorial Scholarship was endowed in 1993 by Mrs. Buell's husband, Col. George B. Buell '22. rThe scholarship honors his wife who was an outstanding alumna, teacher and U.S. Army veteran. Upon Col. Buell's death, the scholarship name was changed to include both Col. and Mrs. Buell. The Buell Scholarship is open to children of alumni. This scholarship is not available for 2017-2018.
  • Class of 1965 Scholarship:  The Class of 1965 Scholarship was inaugurated in 1995 as part of the silver anniversary celebration of the class.  This scholarship is open to relatives of alumni. This scholarship is not available for 2017-2018. 
  • Tony Meyer '49 Scholarship: The Tony Meyer ’49 Scholarship was established in 1995 in appreciation of his service to the College and the Alumni Association.  Mr. Meyer held many positions at the College including administrator, coach and faculty member.  He is Executive Secretary Emeritus of the Alumni Association and received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater.  The Meyer Scholarship is open only to children of alumni.

Eligibility

  • The student must be or intend to be a full-time student at CofC and must participate in a minimum of two College of Charleston organizations.
  • For the Tony Meyer Scholarship, Frances and George Buell Scholarship, and Willard A. Silcox Scholarship:
    Limited to children of College of Charleston alumni. 
  • For the Harry W. Freeman Scholarship and the Class of 1965 Scholarship:
    Limited to relatives of College of Charleston alumni.

Application Process

  • Fill out online scholarship application. Note: Legacy scholarship applicants will automatically be considered for the Alumni Association Scholarships. No additional application is necessary.
  • Application includes the following essays: 
    • List your extracurricular activities in school, community or church, including high school activities for currently enrolled students. 
    • In 500 words or less, describe your most significant volunteer or leadership activity and why it is meaningful to you.  
  • Additional Requirement: A letter from the applicant's parent(s) or relatives stating their activities on behalf of the College and/or the Alumni Association.
